Do you find these symptoms very familiar? Have you experienced them frequently? Then you might be suffering from the migraine headache. Becoming a common health problem these days, every one out of ten people is suffering from this severe headache. The migraine attack lasts between 8-48 hours and it is usually followed by blind spots, flashes of light and increased sensitivity to sound and light. The pain gradually increases over the eyebrow, and if you’re under the sun, it may intensify. Increasing with every pulse, it can radiate to the neck and shoulder of the same side.

Some of the most common causes that contribute to migraine headache are:

  • Hormonal Changes: Sudden changes in estrogen level due to menstruation may trigger a migraine in many women. There have also been cases where women have experienced migraine during pregnancy and menopause.
  • Mental Stress: Being one of the most common reasons, stress causes migraines when there is the release of neurotransmitters like adrenaline and hormones such as cortisol.
Lack of sleep: Not getting enough sleep, and consequent tiredness and weakness can also lead to the migraine attack.
  • Medications: Regular intake of oral contraceptives is also seen as a trigger for the migraine attack.

While medications and preventive measures have been advised to relieve the migraine pain, they are not highly effective or long-lasting. Natural treatments like Ayurveda have been healing various health problems since centuries and migraine is no new to this treatment. An age-old natural migraine relief, Shirodhara is beneficial in stress reduction and treating mental fatigue. Initiating a soothing effect on the brain cells, the treatment requires a calm flow of medicated oil through peripheral nerves of the skin of the forehead. With the uninterrupted flow of soothing oil, Shirodhara helps in tranquilizing and stabilizing the mind, healing problems like anxiety, insomnia, vertigo etc.

According to Ayurveda, Shirodhara treatment is beneficial for pitta and Vata doshas. During stressful or anxiety related episodes, the pitta dosha obstructs the flow of vata dosha, consequently causing a throbbing pain in the head.
